Post Operative pain: What is it?

Medical science has developed to a level where surgeries are minor affairs, even for grave situations. The condition of tissue injury together with muscle spasms after surgery is known as Post Operative pain. It binds to the receptors in our brain (opioid or narcotic) that are responsible for transmitting the painful sensations from all throughout the body to the brain. It, thus, helps in changing the way a person reacts to the pain. This drug has been originally approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) in March 1995. It is seen that the patients taking Tramadol abuse this drug and get addicted to it. This can have a dangerous impact on your health and can lead to death. It is advisable to not misuse it in any way.


How to consume it?

Always have a talk with your doctor before consuming this pill. Your doctor can best recommend you the right dosage according to your medical condition and your response to the treatment. Follow all of his/her instructions very carefully. Below given are some general guidelines for Tramadol consumption:

• The recommended dose of Tramadol is 50-100 mg (immediate release tablets) every 4-6 hours as needed for the pain.

• You can intake it with or without food.

• To improve tolerance initially, start at 25 mg per day, increase it by 25-50 mg every 3 days until you reach the standard dose of 50-100 mg every 4-6 hours.

• Do not consume it with alcohol as it might lead to some dangerous side effects on your body.

• Store it at room temperature away from any presence of dampness and warmth

• If you miss a dose, consume it as you remember. Skip it if it is already time for your next dose and go back to your normal dosing schedule. Do not take an extra pill with your next dose to make up for the missed one.


Side Effects

Commonly reported side effects of Tramadol include nausea, dizziness, headache, constipation, weakness, vomiting, drowsiness etc.

Some less commonly reported side effects include itching, sweating, dry mouth, diarrhea, rash, vertigo, vision loss etc. Some of the users of Tramadol also have reported seizures (convulsions).

• If you are breastfeeding, consult your doctor before taking Tramadol. Discuss with him/her all about the risks and benefits of taking Tramadol while you are breastfeeding.
